Tavo

As promised last week, heres saturdays weekly portion of electro swing. This week courtesy of Tavo.As always guys and girls if you have any comments or questions don't hesitate to mail me at flapper5blog@gmail.com (i'll be inundated with spam now, but at least you can get hold of me).

Tavo aka Gustavo Sandoval, is quite possibly one of the nicest people you will ever meet, and in the spirit of this niceness hes allowed me to share with you three of his new tracks! (the third will come after the interview as an incentive to read it, or maybe scroll downt the page like a cheetah who drank to much red bull.)

Jerome Ferry-JF Airlines (Tavo Jackin the Plane Remix) by Tavo

You can find this on beatport; under voch records!

James Curd-Be my Baby (Tavo Scratch the sh** out of this Remix) by Tavo

So now your tappin your feet and starting to hum along, into the interview! Here goes:

You really came to most peoples attention over here with the excellent black & tan remix but you had been mixing and producing along time before that?
A/ Well, I have been on this road for a very long time, club music and mixing have been with me since I was 13 and I started a DJ Career something around my 14th Bday. As for producing, there is so much to learn and I can't say I'm yet a producer, I'm on the way though. The fact that I release a few tracks don't really give me the confidence to say I deserve that title, but I'm working hard everyday to learn more and more about this and Hollywood (Black & Tan) was a great achievement for me, specially because people actually like it, I'm learning everyday and certainly there are many good tracks on the way!
I've heard about an epic world record mixing session can you tell me more about it all? how did that all come about? did you just wake up one morning and go "I want a world record"?
A/ I don't like to talk much about this but it's true. This was back in '96 and wasn't my idea at all. A radio Station called "La X" in Colombia, invited me to challenge the previous record they did with a fellow DJ, I accepted and gave my best. I think though that it was not a Record personally mine, many people was involved, doctors, DJs, friends and the People of Cali (Colombia) that cheer me up and kept me alive until the doctors said it was enough. I made 127 h 2min of Non Stop Mixing on Radio and no drugs or coffee were involved... a lot of ice though.
You've spent a long time in Asia. Do you think the experience changed you in any way or guided the type of music you play and make?
A/ Sure, Asia is awesome, lived there 7 years and I miss it now. Tokyo made me the International DJ I am now. The challenge of multicultural crowds was really exciting, it invited me to explore new styles of music and experiment with mixing. Then when I move to China, the things were very different, a new challenge, people is not that open to styles that are not commercial so I have to go with the flow, but in time I got a good reputation and beside getting some cool residencies I did 2 massive tours covering the must important cities of China... what an experience!
If you could take one thing away from Asia what would it be?
A/ Nothing, I love everything about it. I think people can't imagine what it really is until a visit, specially regarding China, there is so much we can learn from the living styles of the Asian people... we can tech them also a thing or two ;)
How did you discover electro swing and get into it?
A/ Well let me tell you this, the first Record I bought when I was a kid was "Swing the Mood" by the Mastermixers... since there everytime I listen to this genre it just makes me nuts! The truth is that I as many, heard a track here and there (who didnt play Doop Doop in the early 90s) but there was this TV commercial with
Upside Down by Paloma Faith as soundtrack, that made me realize there was a strong thing happening, so I start researching and Booom! in my face dozens of great producers and many really cool tracks! It hit me immediately, ok...here it is, this will be my first track... and Black & Tan was born!
(in case you havnt heard them all)
Could you tell me some more about these tracks that i'm blogging? How do you come across your samples? endless Internet or record shop searching? or are they personal favorites?
Well for James Curd and Enzo Siffredi, the labels sent me the parts, I use just what I thought was compelling to my perception of the track and I put it together with my own arrangement. For JF Airlines is another story, the original is actually a Progressive track and from it I just used one vocal sample, the rest was made by me as I wanted to give a completely different twist to the track...and I think I did.
Finally what would you describe your sound as at least in the electro swing genre? You have lots of different genres of music, do you enjoy the diversity? or just feel you shouldn't be trapped in anyone genre? if so why?
I will describe my sound as "evolving" since I still on the very humble crawling stage of my producer career, none the less, I will say that my Latino roots make me create tracks with a lot of groove and with a techy line. I love tech House, its simplicity and its sound just make me crazy, you don't need vocals or anything, just a groove and a great bass line and you can express your idea to the maximum. I like diversity though I'm not quite a follower of commercial music, but as I always say, a good song is a good song no matter the genre. As for been trap, I will never be, my Latino roots an my trips around the world made understand that there is no limitations on music and there are many things out there that I dont even know yet... been trap within a music style will never be on my mind as it will be like closing your eyes in front of the ocean, I will miss so much!
And as promised heres the last track:
Tavo's currently down with the flu, so I hope you share my wishes that he get better soon! That makes all for this week. Look forward to a review of Swing Republics new album next time! I have to apologise that it might well not be next saturday, I'm stuck in the coliseum of gladiators that is the EU Parliament all week. I might therfore, have to buy you off with yet another swing mix (if anyones got any good ones send them over)
So have a good week folks, and keep swinging!

Catching up with Bart & Baker for the New Year

roSorry to seem out of it quite recently, I've been waiting on somethings to come to fruition that sadly didnt happen! For future reference im hoping to get something sorted for a post every Saturday! so you can go straight from reading this into listening to the great radio show Bart & Baker are presenting every Saturday evening at 21:00 GMT on http://www.jazzradio.fr/.

Also make sure yu check out my shop on the right hand side of the page to check their new compilation CD!

Talking of Bart & Baker, I managed to catch up with and persuade them to give there views on the last year and the year ahead! It might be February, and many of you might of already broken your new year resolutions, but hopefully anticipation for the year ahead is still in the air!

To give it the new year flavour, heres a mix of some of my favourite tracks of the last year so you have something to listen to whilst you read throught he interview!
Swing Set by longland

We all know that with a new year comes not only fresh opportunities but a chance to reflect on the past year. The past year has been the year of electro swing with it sweeping into the mainstream with some amazing tracks. But was your personal highlight to the year?and also the lowest point if you have one?

2010 has been an outstanding year for us. We had our first Cd released (Swing Party) and we did our first serious production with the Slim Gaillard track as part of Electro Swing III, we played at Bestival, produced an excellent party with the Correspondents. We have launch our first radio show. We feel really lucky but most of all totally thankful to all the people that came to our parties, chose to work with us and obviously liked our sound. On the other side of life, Bart lost one of his relative, so maybe that would be the lowest part of the year for us...

So sorry to hear about that. But good to hear about the many highlights! In your many shows, can you pick out any tracks that you couldn't of been without last year?and possibly a favourite?

Mmmm difficult...but maybe the track Douai Madison from 6u5, because it leaded to a good friendship with him. We're big fans of Swing Republic too. Very intelligent production.

What other dj's and producers did you feel had a good 2010?

I think that the whole Electro Swing scene had quite a lot of fun last year. Most of the Djs and producers have made better sets and records than the year before. Take Club de Belugas and Tape Five, they grow better at each release.

Now in January we have already begun the new year with AlgorhythmiKs brilliant jump for swing, but what else do you think we can expect from 2011 in terms of new music and artists? also events?

Someone I know had the chance to listen to the new Caravan Palace, and it's supposed to be even better than the first album, which was already awsome. Also we have some productions still awaiting to be released - it takes time because of the usual copyright issues. So maybe we'll be part of the exciting stuff. In terms of events, that's what's exciting about them..you never really know what will happen !

Do you have anything exciting planned for the new year?

Our agenda is already pretty booked. Our residencies (at Moulin Rouge & Balajo), a new Pin-up themed party at the iconic Alcazar club in Paris and very soon, we'll unveil the new BAL SWING line up.

Thats all very exciting to hear! Im looking forward to hearing more about this new pin-up themed night! Im sure like everyone else reading here I'm very excited to hear about the new line up!

Thats all for this week but check in next Saturday for a bit of a track exclusive straight from Tavo!

Algorhytmik, Sound Nomaden and Strawberry Dacquiri in a Bag

After the debauchery of new year these few tracks are cutting through the fortnight long hangover bought on by strawberry daiquiri in a bag. If someone offers you alcohol in a bag never take it. To most of you that probably seems like obvious advice, however to the small percentage of you like me who would happily guzzle any bag alchohol, I feel I have to warn you. possible effects may include such things as being sick in your girlfriends slippers. I hope you enjoy these tracks and any alcoholic beverages in bags, as much as I.

Anything Goes (remastered) by Major Zero

I'm sure we will be hearing much more from these few in the year to come!

Happy New Year Everyone!

Bienvenue a Strasbourg!

Unortunatly for all you lovely people ive resurfaced from the depths of deepest darkest prague to find myself in an  internet fuelled france! I think the only place in the world where mcdonalds has a beer garden. Also where I managed to accidentaly order 36 chicken nuggets after they misunderstood my order for 6 mcnuggets as 6 boxes of 6 mcnuggets. Yes I did eat them all in one sitting. Yes I was ill. And yes I will never go to mcdondalds again(for at least a week)

Anyhows, back to the actualy point of this blog, music! I promised a while back a bit of a mix from Odjbox which ive kind of had lying round a while now , Im sorry I wanted to enjoy its exclusivity!

At this point I realise I dont know where iv put the mix, so or a while until i update the post ill have to fob you off with this! Odjbox's latest track!

 Saraghina by Odjbox

And know ive found it again with a lot of help from the man himself! But that over tune was just to good to remove from this post just because im forgetful! But i got hold of the man himself and managed to get in a few questions!

And heres the mix so you can listen while you read:
OdjFrocks and Dancing Socks by odjmixbox

How did you get into electro-swing?"
I didn't even know it existed until a few months back..!
For the past few years I've been heavily getting into swing (Via Duke Ellington, the king of swing!) but I always thought it was a shame that these tunes would probably never fill the dance floors again, so I decided to try remix them in a way that could make them danceable for our modern ears. At the time I saw it more as instrumental hip hop than anything else though... Then when I listened to "White Mink : Black Cotton" I realised that other people were doing exactly what I wanted to do and beyond! From then on I have been a fan of the genre and will have to step up my game!!
"What can we expect from you in the future?"
You can expect me to still be making music, but other than that i'm not really sure... However, I know I'm going to experiment with a few other genres from around the world to blend into the electro swing smoothie! Also, I hope to get together an interesting show with live elements alongside good old fashioned dj-ing.
"What are your top picks of tracks/artists right now?"
Keep on eye on... Trio Manouche, Benny Berigan, Theo Krish, Jem Stone, Dutty Moonshine, The Correspondents, Sup Peeps Records and of course Freshly Squeezed Music.... to name just a few!
Top Tracks outside of electrio swing...
Old Seville by Mumbo Jumbo
CollaBo in Pratellanza by Sunshine feat. RibboRes
The Anthem by Onra
Uncle Sam Goddam by Brother Ali
Linda Morena by Quantic & His Combo Barbaro
"what do you reckon we've got to be excited for in the coming year?"
The explosion of electro swing! Really looking forward to hearing emerging artists take on the genre! One of the beauties of Electro Swing is there are no boundaries! Would love to see 'Swing Hop' branch out a bit too...! So in my eyes we've a lot to be excited about!
Thats it for this week but feel free to get in touch with me guys! im at

Tony Holster Aka TypoBoy

Its been a week since I launched this blog and once again I've been busy skimming the best off the top in terms of electro swing. Have been meaning to get back to you all a lot sooner but an impending move to France has caught me more off guard than anticipated!

This week I'v managed to get in touch with the Parisian DJ Tony Holster, who you may also know as TypoBoy, whos just returned to France after a mini UK tour at places such as the Secret Garden Party. For myself its a bit of a coup to get in touch with him seeing as I've had his website http://www.typoboy.fr/ bookmarked for quite a while! Check it out yourself for new mixes and all!

I got hold of him and managed to ask him a few questions! But First heres a mix you can listen to whilst your reading!

1.what would you say was the first time you heard Electro-Swing and what was your first thoughts?

1. First time I heard Electro-Swing it was just a word. I was playin underground swing house and a girl came to me at the end of my dj set and told me that some of my records were similar to "Caravane Palace" I had never heard about Caravane Palace before that night. I googled it and wow ! that's how I discovered Electro swing ;) And it worked both ways... I was playing records in a club in Paris and Antoine - a member of Caravane Palace (he plays the trombone and machines) came to ask me what was the name of the underground swing house track I was playing !!! ;) The 1st Swing-House mix I've ever decided to play was for my wife's birthday (she loves jazz and vocals). I started spinning records in small venues and was lookin for happy music to mix. I was fed up with all that dark electronic music (minimal tech-house). Everybody was playin' the same sound and it is not such a happy music to play in small venues like Parisian Bars. If people want to listen to that kind of music they just have to go into dark clubs. The first time I played my swing house mix and saw people dancing on it I realized it was the sound of the yesteryears (1920) with the production of the next decade (2020). What a link ! There is also another musical link in my mixes. My parents are from Macedonia and Balkan Music is the 1st music I've ever heard, that's why you can hear Balkan Brass Bands mixed with New-Orleans Brass Bands in my mixes.

2. How did you get started djing?

2. I started djing when I was living in Brussels, It was 6 years ago, I was just scratching a lil' bit at the time... and many DJs and organizers were always at home, afterpartying and mixing, but I was just listening and watching then. The Last week before I left Brussels to go back to Paris, I switched off my cell phone for a week, and learnt to beatmatch... When I came back to Paris my son was born and then I started to mix minimal and tech-house every day for 2 years as a bedroom DJ and I was publishing my mixes at http://www.typoboy.fr/. And the 3rd year I started to mix in small venues in a duet project with Larry Genius called Ventilation Rotative. He was playin lots of Wind Instruments while I was spinning tech-house and minimal stuff. He plays the saxophone (Tenor and Alto), the Flute, toys instruments for kids and even instruments from his own invention. He's a kinda kwezi guy and a good showman hehehe. As I was a lil' bit shy at the beginning, people were rather lookin at his show, that's the way I started DJing...

3. I see that your page mentions the electro swing club de paris? could you tell me a bit more about that? and also the chicken swing?

3. One night I played that underground swing house set at Café des Sports. The program planner immediately asked me for a residency each 1st saturday of each month. This residency is a party called Chicken Swing NOT Chicken Wings. And a year later I asked DJ Tagada to find a place for a bigger party. He asked the owners of the boat where he had started his Balkan Beats Parties 5 years ago. The Electro Swing Club de Paris is the name of the party I organise on this famous and very beautiful chinese boat in Paris. Many famous french artists started there at http://www.damedecanton.com/ It is actually the first, the one and only party dedicated to Electro Swing in France. I was dreaming of a party where people could use fancy dressing, watch for a burlesque show and listen to electroswing bands and international DJs. Nick Hollywood (Freshly Squeezed) and Chris Tofu (Continental Drifts) were already running an Electro Swing Club in London, so we wanted to bring the same kind of music to the french people. We've launched the Electro Swing Club de Paris with my partners from bebop-swing (they organise Electro Swing events in Toulouse and Lyons)

4.What have been your biggest musical influences outside the genre?

4. I'm most influenced by electronic music but I've listened to many music before Electro Swing. My strong interest for music started when I was a child in the 80's, then I went backwards in time with the music of the 70's, the 60's, the 50's etc… until I discovered Robert Johnson the 1st and oldest phonographic recording of blues... and in the 90s I started listening to electronic music. I have also always been interested in the fusion of different kinds of music with electronic music. Mashups and things like that. It's a kind of encyclopaedic way of discovering music. I'm very curious and in music it's important for me to go beyond boundaries.

5. could you give us your top five electro-swing tracks?

1/ Der Dritte Raum's Swing Bop (which is a remix of their own trance track from the 90's!) is for me the ultimate electro swing track... I started to play that track a long time ago and I still play it. To me it's THE electro Swing anthem and the cornerstone of Electro Swing, it's a swing track produced like a house track.
2/ Hollywood Black and Tan from the amazing DJ Tavo (we are actually working together on a track)
3/ Bouffée d'Air from KKC Orchestra which is simply the best electro swing band for me.
http://www.myspace.com/lekkcorchestra4/ Why Don't You is a swing house remix of a jazz standard by Gramophonedzie (he's from ex-Yugoslavia like my parents!).

5/ And watch out for the incoming main track from Max Pashm's first electro swing EP, tha kinda track you listen and five minutes later you are whistling the melody while you're washin your dishes !!! Well... today machines do the dishes... but this one makes you whistle with your dishwasher ! :)

6. What can the world of electro-swing expect from the latter half of 2010?

6. Things are moving quickly. I've listened to "We No Speak Americano" something like 6 months ago but I had never imagined this track would be Number 1 in the UK ! and reach the Top Ten in the world. I've never played that track. As I was not playing Caravane Palace. Many people have theories about music evolution but nobody knows what is gonna happen with electro-swing. I know that I've play that music for a long time now because I love it and for all the reasons I've told you before. Some people think it is a subgenre that will die as quickly as it appeared (should die in 2 years). Some people think it's gonna be like Big Beat (3 main bands in 5 years and will be over in 10 years). Some others think it will be like the Balkan Beats scene (but a Balkan Beat track never reached the top ten). I think we just have to remember that Swing was here before us and will stay forever. It will maybe disappear from the musical horizon but it will never die. The most important thing is that electro swing does not belong to anybody but to each and all of us.

And to clean up the confusion between Tony Holster and TypoBoy
"Typoboy is a graphical project, as I am a graphic designer,
Typoboy is alive man ! he has serif for the feets, he walks, he shoot/spray ink against enemies, etc… it's an animated project and a book for graphic designers childs to learn typography and also typo goodies (like Pucca or hello Kitty)."

Tony Holster is at present  planning a show with 2 bad bad girls for the launching of a new electro swing club somewhere in Europe! The show is named : Tony Holster and the Bad Bad Girls!

Thats all for today folks! We should have an interview upcoming with Odjbox soon and an ecclusive mix just for us guys! Im leaving off on travels on thursday for three weeks so hope to get it it up before then, but in any case expect a mammoth post in three weeks!

White Mink : Black Cotton

Whilst I'm busy spending my time searching the net for new music I thought I would bring you something to pour your time over! White Mink:Black Cotton has been called "Electro-Swing's first landmark moment" by Mixmag and its easy to see why. Such a landmark moment is therefore a great place to start this blog's
Electro-Swing adventures!

Check out the 30 minute free sample mix of the album!

Various - WHITE MINK 30 min album sampler mix by FreshlySqueezed

The album put together by Nick Holywood of Freshly Squeezed fame (along with El Nino and Lady Kamikaze of London's fine Black Cotton and Lady Luck clubs) exists in the form of a seamless juxtaposition between long forgotten classics of the original era and the contemporary movement they've  inspired.

It really acts as a who's who of the genre which makes it a great introduction for all those who've had the slice of a few tracks and want a bigger piece of the pie. Strasbourg's Lyre Le Temps present us with a House inspired Hold The Night that  really makes the collection if I have to pick favourites. The more hip hop influenced tracks are also in show with an excellent take on the genre from Energie Du Verre with Jitterbug that really reinvents things.

If your out and about in the UK you can look out for several festival appearances coming up at Bestival and
Big Chill. You can also check out Electro Swing every third Saturday of the month at The Book Club in Shoreditch and White Mink will be every third Friday of the month in Brighton from September.

You Can Buy the album here:

Hey all and Welcome to Flapper5, (Flappers was taken),

This is a new blog committed to searching out the latest in electro-swing and all styles thereabouts.
After finding that I'm constantly making my friends listen to the likes of Parov Stelar and Movits! , I feel that the next step in sharing the music I enjoy is here with all of you!

Don't let that fool you into thinking that the well established names are all I'll be posting up here though! I'm Dedicated to using my free time to trawl the net, looking for the best of the unknown for fellow electro-swing enthusiasts.

I'm never going to be posting Copywrighted tracks for download. So don't expect any big name free tracks! However I to get in touch with artists and hopefully provide some free promotional downloads with their blessing for you!

The aim here is to not to share my tastes though! Its to help the artists too, by making another platform from which they can reach out! Its also to help promoters advertise their nights to get kids in the clubs! Its all about Spreading the Swing!
